I am looking for a poem by Fr.Ryan. I do not know the name. It is a poem about a man and a woman in love, but one becomes a priest and the other a nun. Years later, the priest finds her cemetery marker, and goes to a convent to inquire about it. In the poem, he says white roses die first. I have a book of his poems, but that one is not in it. Can someone help me? it is a beautiful love poem. (...)
Ryan is the greatest poet of the Confederacy, and the greatest American poet after Whitman. He has been largely ignored for a century for pretty obvious political reasons, but at one time his collected poems were a perennial bestseller in the South. His best poem is Sentinel Songs, a tribute to Robert E. Lee. Treat yourself and get this poem (in his collected Poems); it is one of the very few truly immortal poems ever written in American English.
It is a clear and easy to read book of poetry. If poems, which were written in a chronological context could be dated there would be more historical meaning.
The print is defective. Many pages are not readable. Other books by same publisher are defective, too.
